Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers was founded in 2002, in Wichita, Kansas, by Freddy Simon, a 92-year-old WWII veteran, his two sons Bill and Randy, and the family's longtime friend and partner, Scott Redler. With the exception of the three original company-owned sites, Freddy's presently has 282 restaurants in 31 states, all of which are franchises.

The restaurant is famous for Freddy's frozen custard, which is smoother and thicker than ice cream because it is churned in a special way that minimizes ice crystals. You'll probably enjoy Freddy's menu if you enjoy a conventional fast food burger, fries, and dessert. Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers features vintage decor as well as traditional and innovative menu choices, and yes, you can find multiple items on the menu that are suitable for someone living with diabetes.

There's a lot to like at Freddy's, whether it's burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, or chicken, but a lot of it is heavy in carbs, sugar and fat. If you're trying to limit your carbs intake, you might want to avoid this fast food staple. You may, however, enjoy a meal at Freddy's with a little planning and savvy menu choices.

Freddy's has a variety of frozen custard flavors, from single scoops to shakes as well as chicken sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs. When dining here, you'll be able to opt for more healthful selections thanks to a menu of lettuce-wrapped options.

Here’s what you can enjoy at Freddy’s if you’re watching your carbs and sugar intake to manage your diabetes.

Sandwiches

On the menu at Freddy's, you'll find a variety of savory sandwiches, including chicken sandwiches, burgers, and even a veggie burger. Each sandwich is offered on its own or as part of a combo meal that includes a medium drink and your choice of fries or Baked Lay's.

Burgers at many fast food places are heavy in fat and calories, owing to the bun. To keep your calorie and carb intake in line, Freddy's offers lettuce-wrapped sandwiches.

Order the lettuce-wrapped grilled chicken breast savory sandwich to keep calories and carbs low. You'll consume 130 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams of carbohydrates, 22 grams of protein, and 270 milligrams of salt by foregoing the bun and opting for the low-carb option.

Hot Dogs

Freddy's provides three distinct hot dog tastes on the menu to help you satisfy your appetite. The ordinary Freddy's hot dog, the Chicago hot dog, and the chili cheese hot dog are all available. Each hot dog can be ordered lettuce wrapped, just like the savory sandwiches, to keep the meal low-carb.

The Freddy's hot dog contains 380 calories, 21 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 34 grams of carbs, 14 grams of protein, and 900 milligrams of sodium. You can also enjoy one wrapped in lettuce at 170 calories, 14 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, 2 grams of carbs, 8 grams of protein, and 560 milligrams of sodium.

Kids combo

Some of Freddy's most popular items, such as the cheeseburger, burger, grilled cheese, hot dog, and chicken tenders, are included in the kids' combos. Each combo also includes a drink and a side of your choice. To increase the nutritional value of the meal, choose applesauce instead of fries or Baked Lay's. Among all of the kid's combos, the chicken tenders combo has the best nutritional value. This dish has 270 calories, 11 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 19 grams of carbs, 23 grams of protein, and 870 milligrams of sodium.

Sides

There are sides and snacks on Freddy's menu, including cheese curds, onion rings, fries (with optional toppings), chicken tenders, chili, applesauce, and Baked Lay's. While certain dishes are more healthful than others, many sides can significantly increase your daily calorie and carbs intake.

If you want to serve a side dish with your meal, Mott's natural applesauce is the ideal option. It has 50 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 grams of saturated fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of protein, and 0 milligrams of sodium.

Choose a bag of Baked Lay's for 120 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 0 grams of saturated fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of protein, and 160 milligrams of sodium.

Bottom line

If you're looking for a low-carb, healthful dinner, you're not going to head to a fast food restaurant like Freddy's. However, you don't have to go all out when you find yourself here with your family or friends. If you're watching your carbs and sugar intake, have a small serving of your favorite dishes or divide your meal with a friend. You'll be able to enjoy your Freddy's lunch without risking a spike in your blood sugar levels.
